Who do we help and how?
The Derbyshire Handy Van Service is delivered on behalf of Derbyshire County Council. It is open to vulnerable people, as well as those aged 60 or over in North Derbyshire for the following:
- Home Fire Safety Checks
- Smoke alarms provided and installed
- Energy efficiency advice
- Practical tasks – changing light bulbs, securing carpets and rugs, removing and hanging curtains, path and door access clearance and other tasks as appropriate.
- Key safe installation – we can supply one at cost which we will fit free of charge, or you can supply your own if preferred.
- Telecare equipment installation

Will it cost me anything?
No, The Handy Van is a tendered Derbyshire County Council Service, run through Connex Community Support, and as such, is funded. However, you will have to purchase materials, such as key safes, which will then be installed, free of charge.
How do I get referred on to the Handy Van Service?
You may be referred by Derbyshire County Council Adult Care, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, the District or Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Constabulary or health professionals. You can also ring 0203 535 4999 (calls are charged at the local rate) to find out if you are eligible to use this service.
How do I book a visit from the Handy Van?
All bookings, initial enquiries and registration for service users have to made through ringing 0203 535 4999 (calls are charged at a local rate). Your enquiry will then get passed on to us and we will contact you about making an appointment for a visit.
