Sight Support Derbyshire have a range of volunteer roles they are looking to recruit for. Please see below for more information about each role.
Photographer
Sight Support Derbyshire is seeking a volunteer photographer who can attend events and other photo opportunities on an ad hoc basis and help us keep our stock of photographs up to date. You will need to have your own camera and equipment and insurance, and your own editing software. You will also need your own means of travelling to different locations. Although most of our events happen in Derby, sometimes there is a need to travel to different areas of the county.
Skills Required: Excellent photographic skills, particularly photographing people. Media or commercial experience is desirable but not essential. Good communication skills. Ability to follow a brief. Skills in video recording and editing would also be useful.
You need to provide us with the details of one person who can provide a character reference for you.
Times Commitments: This is a casual role, which offers interesting and varied assignments, which could be weekdays, evenings or weekends, subject to your availability.

Home Visiting Befriender Volunteer
Our Home Visiting Befriending Scheme was set up to help alleviate some of the isolation that may be caused by visual impairment, for example in a situation where someone has very little contact with friends and family, you will be providing a befriending relationship to visually impaired people. Support our service users with tasks such as reading, guided walking, shopping together, and general socialising especially to those who are isolated and have no company or support.
Skills Required: Good clear communication skills.
Be able to complete a monthly report on the progress of the visit. The use of a car would be advantageous although not essential.
You will need to provide us with the names of two people who can provide a character reference for you. There will also be a DBS check for this role, which would require you to provide the relevant ID.
Time Commitments: To be discussed between you and your befriending match to see what suits you both in regards to the specific times and days, we would require some consistency to ensure regular contact.

Mobile Resource Volunteer-
Our Mobile Resource Centre was set up to deliver eye health information and demonstrate low vision aids and equipment to visually impaired people, their family and to interested members of the public. Within the volunteer role, our MRC Project Worker will contact you with potential visits to venues around Derbyshire. You can decide which dates and venues you can support. We will provide you with a suitcase of Sight Support Derbyshire equipment, information leaflets and low vision aids to take with you to the event so that you can set up a stand. Some equipment is available for purchase so you will be provided with petty cash if somebody was interested in buying an item.
Skills Required: Be friendly and approachable for passers-by. Willing to learn about visual impairment and support available. Be able to complete expense forms and other simple log sheets about your visits.

Time Commitments: This is a casual ad-hoc position, you will be required as and when we have events for you to attend.

Collection Box Volunteer Driver
Sight Support Derbyshire needs to raise funds to provide support for blind and visually impaired people around the county. Our collection boxes make a valuable contribution towards the money we raise. You will be collecting and replacing our Sight Support Derbyshire collection boxes that are situated around the county. Your ‘patch’ can be in and around the area where you live, or a little further afield if you wish to.
Skills Required: A full driving licence and the use of a vehicle, You will be required to provide us with the names of two people who can provide a character reference for you
Time Commitments: This is a flexible role; however, you will be expected to drop the full boxes into the head office in Derby or at our sub office in Chesterfield.

Children and Young People Services Volunteer
The Derby Children and Young people’s group helps children and young people with varying degrees of sight loss and associated additional needs to gain confidence, self-esteem, independence and reduce isolation. The aim of our group is to give the children and young people the opportunity to make friends, share opportunities, develop social/life skills and gain confidence.
Skills Required: Good communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, patience and enthusiasm for seeing children and young people reach their full potential. Some knowledge/experience of working with children and young people either in a parental or caring role is advantageous but not essential.
You will need to provide us with the names of two people who can give us a character reference for you. There will also be a DBS check for this role, which would require you to provide the relevant ID
Time Commitments: Every 2 weeks in the evenings usually around the hours of 5:45pm-7:15pm, and occasional activities during the holidays as well.

Coin Counting Volunteer
Sight Support Derbyshireis an independent charity, which needs to raise funds in order to provide services for blind and visually impaired people around the county. We require a volunteer to help with counting coins from our collection boxes ready for banking.
Working alongside another volunteer you will use our counting machine to count how much is in each collection box, keeping an accurate record in accordance with our counting procedures. You will then prepare the money for banking.
Skills Required: Numeracy, dexterity, confident using the counting machine following training, excellent attention to detail, patience, calm approach.
You will need to provide us with the names of two people who can give us a character reference for you.
Time Commitments: Time commitment will average around 1-2 sessions per month, with each session being around 2-3 hours. Day and time will be arranged with you to suit both yourself and the other volunteer and will be during office hours, Monday – Thursday. You will be based at our Derby office (address below).
