Cancer Support Services

Our Cancer Support Service provides non-clinical guidance, wellbeing and practical support for people living with or beyond cancer across the Derbyshire Dales.

A cancer diagnosis can affect many areas of life, and sometimes it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. Our Cancer Coordinator is here to provide a listening ear, practical information and individual support, helping you to find the right services and support for your needs.

How we can help:

  • Emotional wellbeing and someone to talk to
  • Practical advice and information
  • Finding and accessing other services and sources of support
  • Signposting and referrals to appropriate organisations
  • Support with practical issues and accessing available help
  • Reducing isolation and building confidence
  • Regular wellbeing calls where appropriate
  • Information about local activities and wellbeing opportunities
  • Connecting with others who are living with or beyond cancer

Our support is non-clinical and does not replace medical advice or treatment. We work alongside healthcare and other support services to help you feel more informed, supported and in control.

Who can access the service?

The service is available to anyone aged 55+ living in the Derbyshire Dales who are living with or beyond cancer, as well as family members supporting someone affected by cancer.

You can contact us directly to find out more or ask to be referred to the service. Referrals can be made by a GP, healthcare professional or another organisation supporting you.

You don’t need to know exactly what support you need before getting in touch. We can have a conversation about what is important to you and look at how we may be able to help.

Wellness Cancer Support Groups

As part of our Cancer Support Service, we run monthly Wellness Cancer Support Groups in both Ashbourne and Matlock.

Each month, the groups offer a different gentle activity designed to promote wellness, wellbeing, relaxation, connection and taking time for yourself.

Previous activities have included:

  • Gratitude and Affirmation Cards
  • Hand Reflexology
  • Guided Meditation
  • Vision Board Workshop
  • Chair-Based Exercises
  • Mindful Painting

The activities are relaxed and accessible, with an emphasis on enjoying the experience rather than achieving a particular outcome. The groups also provide an opportunity to meet others who are living with or beyond cancer in a friendly and supportive environment.

You don’t have to talk about your cancer or share anything personal. You can simply come along, meet others and take part in as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

The groups are for people aged 55+ living in the Derbyshire Dales who are living with or beyond cancer, as well as family members supporting someone affected by cancer.
