Community Speed Watch Volunteer – Role Description

Role Title:Community Speed Watch (CSW) Volunteer.
Reports To:Community Speed Watch Coordinator.
Location:Various community locations within the local area.
CommitmentFlexible, volunteer-based.

Role Purpose:

Community Speed Watch Volunteers play a vital part in improving road safety by helping to reduce speeding in local neighbourhoods. Working as part of a trained team, volunteers use approved equipment to monitor vehicle speeds, raise driver awareness, and support long-term safety initiatives alongside the police and local authorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a CSW team to carry out roadside speed monitoring sessions at approved locations.
  • Set up and operate speed detection equipment (e.g., handheld speed devices, signage, and recording sheets or tablets).
  • Record details of speeding vehicles accurately and legibly.
  • Promote safer driving through a visible roadside presence.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including wearing high-visibility clothing and positioning equipment correctly.
  • Liaise with the Community Speed Watch Coordinator regarding schedules, equipment, and reporting.
  • Treat all members of the public professionally, politely, and without confrontation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of any information obtained during monitoring sessions.
  • Attend training sessions and briefings as required.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must complete mandatory training provided by the scheme.
  • Must be able to stand for the duration of a monitoring session (typically 1 hour).
  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Willing to undergo any necessary police checks, if required.

Time Commitment:

Volunteers can offer as much or as little time as they wish. Sessions are typically arranged at mutually convenient times and may occur during weekdays, evenings, or weekends.
