A great opportunity for an empathetic volunteer to share their IT knowledge in a community setting. IT expertise is not needed, but some prior knowledge and a willingness to learn, teach and share IT alongside a cup of tea! Technology connects people with loved ones, helps them meet new people, or explore new opportunities and experiences. It can also positively benefit mental and physical health, and tackle depression and loneliness.

It helps people across the High Peak to attend medical appointments and social activities if they can’t access their own or public transport. Volunteer Drivers carry out the journeys with their own cars and often wait in the hospital or the GP surgery until the appointment is over. They also bring people to social clubs, the hairdresser or shopping – providing a much appreciated service for people who do not have a car or someone to take them or where public transport is too far away or infrequent.
Please contact us or express your interest by emailing transport@connex.org.uk or phoning us on 01298 23970.
We will then arrange to meet you for an informal interview and to provide us with some more details about yourself in a brief application form, amongst which the contact details for two referees. Once all this has been completed to everyone’s satisfaction, you are ready for the training.

We are a fully set up community garden, with a variety of growing areas and wildlife habitats. Our mission is to provide a safe, healthy outdoor environment where local residents can meet to grow flowers and crops, or just sit and enjoy the outdoors and tranquillity. We support adults with mental health issues, physical or learning disabilities and older lonely, isolated people. Our garden is fully accessible for people with disabilities.
We aim to work in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way. We garden organically as far as possible, using different techniques in the vegetable beds – no-dig, companion planting and four-crop rotation.
We keep abreast of good practice, for instance we use peat-free compost and we have researched different brands to find ones we are happy with. We make our own compost and we collect horse manure from a nearby farm, in order to ensure healthy soil and crops. We have no water on tap, so we use rainwater collected on site.
This is an amazing opportunity for someone to take forward a well-established and highly valued community garden, as the current manager is retiring because of ill health. The garden has been beautifully landscaped with a variety of growing areas – raised beds and safe paths to give full access to people with limited mobility, large grassed areas with fruit trees, and wild areas to encourage biodiversity, including a small pond. We grow organically, and have experimented with different techniques – no dig, companion planting and crop rotation. We are committed to peat-free compost and are working towards making our own potting compost. We have a large greenhouse and are setting up solar powered energy for light and heat. All in all, this is an exciting opportunity to really make our contribution to climate change and sustaining our wildlife.
Would suit a retired professional gardener or experienced amateur gardener with an interest in supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of our volunteers and other garden users. A shared post for two would be ideal as the role will include managing the administration of the garden.

The Deputy Mayor of High Peak, Councillor Stewart Gardner, attended the presentation of donations by Hall Bank Trust to the Buxton-based charity Connex Community Support.
The total of £15,840 goes towards the running costs of 3 projects: One is to create a “What’s On for Older People in Buxton” guide which will list social and recreational offers available for everyone over 65, as well as services that provide help and support when needed.
Roddie MacLean from the Hall Bank Trust says: “This project is one of the first that BHBT has directly instigated. We usually wait to be asked for financial help – and are open to any request which benefits older people in Buxton – but felt a guide would allow older people to know what’s available and also show providers where the gaps in provision are!”
Buxton Hall Bank Trust emerged following the sale of the former Hall Bank Day Centre. The Trust has funds invested and aims to give away the income for the benefit of older people in Buxton, on an ongoing basis. BHBT has had a period of enforced inactivity following the death of its much loved treasurer Sue West, but is delighted to now be continuing her legacy.
The other projects supported by the donation are the Connex Befriending service and key safe installation scheme. The former supports around 45 older people through volunteers visiting them and spending time for a chat which ensures regular social contact and better mental wellbeing.
Connecting people within their communities is the key focus of Connex which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and provides services for people of all ages. Amongst these is a Home Maintenance and Clearance service which will carry out the key safe installations for people who need them in order to be discharged from hospital, or for home care arrangements to be put in place.
Roy Pickles from Hall Bank Trust instigated the idea following his shock about the closure of a Handy Van Service in 2022 which had previously provided this support.
André Knirsch from Connex confirmed: “We are extremely grateful about the support from Hall Bank Trust as it enables us to help with key safe installations again and provide other services such as the befriending scheme and creating the ‘What’s On’ guide. Such projects are difficult to fund through statutory monies and grant making programmes yet their impact is that people can live safe and fulfilling lives”.
We are a Community Group that offers Afternoon Tea on a monthly basis for residents aged 65 and over from Tideswell and the surrounding villages. It is an opportunity for mature residents to socialise with other villagers in warm surroundings, particularly good for those who don’t get out and live alone.
We are looking for people who have their own car and full driving licence and are available, after a DBS check, to collect less able-bodied villagers for tea and ensure they get inside the building safely.
Volunteers need to be enthusiastic, confident, great communicators, reliable and sensitive, and with a great smile!
